Oakland University GPA Calculator
Work out your Oakland University semester and cumulative GPA using the official Honor Points 4.0 scale published by OU's Office of the Registrar. Add each course, its credit hours, and your grade, and the calculator does the rest — no sign-up, nothing stored.
Oakland University's Official GPA Scale
OU converts every letter grade to a numeric "Honor Point" value on a 4.0 scale. Only numeric grades count toward GPA — marks like S, U, W, R, SP, and Z carry no GPA credit hours.
| Letter Grade | Honor Points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
OU's published scale has no A+ Honor Point value and no D- Honor Point value, so neither appears above or in this calculator. Non-numeric marks — S (Satisfactory), U (Unsatisfactory), W (Withdrawal), R (Temporary), SP (Satisfactory Progress), and Z (Audit) — are excluded from GPA credit hours entirely. Your official grades, credit hours, and cumulative GPA are recorded through MySAIL, OU's student information system. You can view your full transcript there at any time.
How OU Calculates Your GPA
Oakland University's Office of the Registrar uses a straightforward honor-points formula for both semester and cumulative GPA.
Semester GPA: multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get honor points earned, add the honor points and credit hours across all courses for the term, then divide total honor points by total credit hours.
Cumulative GPA: repeat the same process across every completed term plus your current semester — total all honor points, total all GPA hours, then divide. Enter your current CGPA and GPA Hours above and this calculator does that step automatically.
S/U grades don't count. If you're projecting a GPA that includes a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory graded course, leave it out — OU excludes S/U courses from GPA credit hours, so they won't appear in your GPA Hours total in MySAIL either.
About Oakland University
Oakland University was founded in 1957. Matilda Dodge Wilson and her husband, Alfred Wilson, donated their 1,400-acre Meadow Brook estate and $2 million to Michigan State University to create it.
The new campus opened in 1959 under the name Michigan State University–Oakland, with just 570 students and three buildings. It was renamed Oakland University in 1963, when its first class graduated.
OU became a fully independent institution in 1970. Today it sits on roughly 1,443 acres spanning Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills, Michigan — making it one of the larger university campuses in the state.
Meadow Brook Hall, the Wilsons' original 110-room Tudor-revival mansion, still stands on campus. It's now a National Historic Landmark and a working museum open to the public.
The Carnegie Foundation classifies Oakland as a doctoral research university. It's also the only major research university located in Oakland County, which is where the school gets its name.

Admissions, Enrollment & Campus Life
For fall 2025, Oakland enrolled 15,979 students in total. That included 2,330 new first-year students — the largest freshman class OU had welcomed since 2019.
Roughly 30% of that incoming class identified as underrepresented minority students, the most diverse group OU has enrolled on record. Students came from 46 Michigan counties, 23 U.S. states, and 16 countries.
OU is generally considered accessible rather than highly selective, admitting most academically qualified applicants. Programs like the Golden Guarantee cover full tuition for eligible incoming Michigan residents, and about half of new freshmen receive a Pell award.
Outside the classroom, OU's athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Horizon League, playing under the name the Golden Grizzlies. Students can also choose from more than 300 student organizations, along with Greek life and on-campus housing.
Notable Oakland University Alumni
OU's alumni network has grown to more than 100,000 graduates since the university's first class in 1963. A few names stand out across very different fields.
Author Jeffrey Eugenides, who wrote The Virgin Suicides and the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel Middlesex, is among OU's most recognized graduates in literature.
Actor Curtis Armstrong, known for roles across film and television, also studied at Oakland, as did professional basketball player Keith Benson.
